Developing the Total Boy for Christ

The Value of Royal Rangers

By Victor Yong

I joined the Royal Rangers when I was eight years old. At first I wasn’t interested at all in the Royal Rangers’ programme but my dad persuaded me to just give it a try. After some time I agreed to go and for nearly a month my dad sat with me throughout the Royal Rangers meeting. I was scared at first of the other boys and the Commanders but after some time I began to enjoy myself.

I have been in Royal Rangers for nearly 10 years now and within that time I have learnt a tremendous amount. Everything from camping, fire craft, jungle trekking, first aid and survival have been taught and passed down to me from all the dedicated Commanders in my Royal Rangers’ Outpost, Kuala Lumpur #1.

Through the years, I have come to understand the importance of being responsible and punctual. I have also learned the meaning of being tough. The leadership post that I have been given has taught me all these. I have been an assistant patrol guide and a patrol guide, and now I serve as a junior commander. It is imperative to be dedicated and focused on your work in order to be a good leader. A good leader also commands a great amount of respect from his boys, and to gain the boy’s respect you must first respect them. The leadership training from my participation in Royal Rangers is invaluable and it has indeed made me a more responsible person.

Being in the Royal Rangers is not only about having fun in the sun. In everything that we do, the most important thing is that God is in all our plans and decisions, for if we do not first commit our work to Him, then what we do becomes futile. My spiritual walk with Him has improved greatly over the past few years. Indeed the bible studies and devotions as well as the spiritual guidance given by the Commanders have slowly formed me into a more desirable and pleasing person in God’s eyes. Gone was the old self. I have chosen to walk closer to Jesus day by day and I have regularly reaffirm my commitment.

I’m happy to go out tracting or anywhere else in my uniform or t-shirt even though people might tease us and call us 'Power Rangers'. The trick here to not get upset but to focus on the objective of the Royal Rangers to reach, teach and keep boys for Christ. I am happy to be part of this ministry because I belong to an organization that can be found around the world, an organization that really cares for the welfare of their boys and most importantly an organization that has our master ranger, Jesus, backing us up. Royal Rangers has truly revolutionize my life.
